Success (& Clean Sheet)

Boca Seniors this week, a team that often yo-yos between the Championship and Division 1 and from time to time is strengthened by the acquisition of top individual talent from other teams. Speaking of top talent, we had 7 players available this week, so no substitutes, no chance of astute managerial changes that might change the shape of the game. We were relying on Goose, Joe, Jake (welcome back), Phil, Sean (welcome back), Matt and Andy. The weather was ATROCIOUS. I cannot recall when I last got so wet watching 40 minutes of football. I could pour the water out off my shoes at the end.

Like a fool I went to collect one of our practice balls that got kicked out of the ground at the end of our warm up period. The end result of this was that I got myself pretty covered in mud from the sodden grass that surrounds the pitch AND I managed to miss our opening goal. No doubt it was a thing of beauty carved, out by a majestic, sweeping series of passes and technical interplay that culminated in a stunning finish, or a scuffed shot that trickled past the goalkeeper and gently rolled in to the back of the net. You can decide which is more likely.

Boca Seniors had 8 men, so they had a series of substitutions that they were making. Not sure if this really helped them since they were always making minor adjustments to most roles. Still, they managed to get a few shots in, most of which went wide of the post and those that were on target were very competently dealt with by Goose in conditions that were generally unfavourable to goalkeepers. We were creating too and Andy and Matt had flashed various shots past the post or over the bar. Eventually Andy got a powerful left foot shot on target and we were 2 - 0 up. The weather was not helping the playing of attractive football.

Second half was more of the same, Boca Seniors largely failing to hit the target, heavy rain, Sand City strollers under instructions to keep hold of the ball, play it fo feet and do nothing silly. Slightly negative perhaps but we saw out the game with no further goals scored. A bit of Boca Seniors frustration, but nothing too serious. Three points, thank you very much.
