Ouch!

Up against top of the league this week, so this was always going to be "interesting". We had 7 players but how would they fare against a free scoring team with only 1 defeat all season? Could we turn 1 defeat into 2?

Well, for 35 or so minutes it almost went pretty well. They were passing and moving well but not causing us too many problems. A lot of their chances were going the wrong side of the post, over the bar or into Goose's safe hands. We were creating a few chances ourselves, but not seeing the back of their net bulge. Eventually their pressure told, they snatched a goal either side of half time.

We responded well, got one back, so 1 - 2 down with just over 10 minutes to go. It was more of the same, prolonged pressure, with snatches of relief with a shot whizzing past the post from us. But the last 6 or 7 minutes were too much for us, they scored 4 goals in that period, perhaps we had just been worn down. Why do these games go on for 40 minutes?

Ouch!

We tried, but came second. FC Gulp - where have they come from? - proved to be a skilled, quick, gifted set of players who were just a little bit too good for us, especially in attack and surging runs from midfield. We had a strong squad of nine, Goose, Paul, Jake, Phil, Sean, Matt, Mark, Mikey and Andy who al played a part, though none was probably busier than our keeper, Goose.

We did manage to keep that at bay fairly well in the first half, it took them 10 minutes to score their first and they got their second just before half time, while we created some good chances, hit the bar and post. They wore us down in the second and added 4 more with us getting a dumb of comfort when Andy scuffed a shot, it bobbled towards the goal and a defender running back pushed it in to the back of the net.

Roll on next week - Redstar Fulwood.
